Christmas at Macombers

Staged:
Christmas at Macomber’s

Dec. 10, 2016

by Ray Siphed
based on his book "The Christmas Store"
directed by Will Jeffries

Like the holiday itself, Christmas at Macombers combines celebration, sentiment, imagination and illusion. To the customers and salespeople of Macombers, a large, urban department store, Thomas Cavanaugh is a familiar face. A long-time employee with an engaging charm and keen, observant eye, he recalls some of the most memorable stories of the holidays that he encountered in the great emporium during the many years he walked its floors. Among the stories is the challenge posed by one shoppers list of Christmas gifts; the festive way five temporary sales people celebrate on Christmas Eve; the touching tale of the young man responsible for items lost and, for him, found inside the store; the mystery behind a man whose visits to the Books Department grow more puzzling as Christmas nears; and finally, Mr. Cavanaughs very personal account of his own life within the store itself. Step into Macombers and be enraptured by the warmth, delight and wonder that await!

One of David Mamet's best plays and certainly his funniest. In the play, newly appointed studio chief Bobby Gould is under pressure to deliver a hit. His longtime colleague Charlie Fox gifts him with a tip that will enrich Fox and enable the studio chief to land a superstar who always works for a rival studio. But as the men discuss, they involve an attractive temp secretary who becomes the subject of a bet between them over who can bed her. Turns out she has her own angle to rise up the Hollywood ladder, and manipulates both Hollywood vets. The play was a Broadway hit and most recently had a successful set run on London's West End.

A contemporary rock musical, "bare" is, at its heart, an operatic love story. With contemporary themes of bullying, personal identity, drugs & alcohol, and sexuality, it follows a group of high school seniors at a Catholic boarding school. As they struggle to come to terms with who they are, and who the world thinks they should be, they seek answers from their church, their friends, and ultimately, from within themselves. Its rich, vibrant score draws on many styles of contemporary music. - TRW

Ten guilty strangers are trapped on an island. One by one, they are accused of murder. One by one, they start to die! In this superlative mystery comedy statuettes of little soldier boys on the mantel of a house on an island off the coast of Devon fall to the floor and break one by one as those in the house succumb to a diabolical avenger. A nursery rhyme tells how each of the ten "soldiers" met his death until there were none. Eight guests who have never met each other or their apparently absent host and hostess are lured to the island and, along with the two house servants, marooned. A mysterious voice accuses each of having gotten away with murder and then one drops dead - poisoned. One down and nine to go! The excitement never lets up in this classic thriller by one of the world's most loved authors - she is only outsold by the Bible and Shakespeare.
